russian vs greek Posted: 14/01/2012 by ladylevocz |

My son has had a russian tortoise for over five years. We found another on craigslist that was supposed to be another female. His dad met the person and picked it up. While it looked similiar to the one we had it did look a little different. Turns out it is a greek. It is 5 years also and the same size so they have been housed together for 6 months with no problems in a very large 100 gallon long with heat and lighting. Now we see them mating last night. Obvously, they are not both female? Will we end up with eggs. What to do now because the person we bought from is gone and my son is attached?

Hi there, first of all I suggest you post some photos on this site so we can be certain about identification. Side, top, under and tail region pictures will help. Also there is no guarantee they are male and female. Same sex torts do mount each other to assert dominance sometimes...I was surprised when mine did! The more info you give us, the more we can offer sound advice. Look forward to next posting. Regards, David nr York.
