Hi
No this is not true. Hermanns are a hibernating species. It is not recommended that you hibernate a tortoise the first year, so that you can make sure they are fit and healthy, and have been given the thumbs up by an experienced tortoise vet. Can I ask how old they are, and what set up you have them?

Hi
If you are having to use the vivarium or fish tanks as I like to call them, temporary until you build your open top pen, then get as much air as possible circulating through it. The main problem with viv's is that you cannot get a variable temperature which the tortoise needs to thermoregulate their bodies. Ply wood is perfect as it is much lighter, you just have to smooth off the edges as it does splinter where the cutting edge is. Have you had a read of the fact sheets opposite under "The tortoise" they are very useful and will give you some good guidelines. At the age your two are, if their health is good then there would be no reason why hey cannot be hibernated this coming winter, that will also give you plenty of time to get what is needed into place and to learn about it. Please keep asking if you want any other help
