Hi,

My tortoise has a kind of white sticky liquid coming out from its mouth and nose.It also refuses to eat the white bread I feed it daily.I would have to open its mouth and put the bread in.Later,I will feed it water so that it won't choke and it would often vomit the bread out.As for the eyes,one of its eyes are reddish in colour.I applied the eye drop on it and it could open its eye today.I would like to know whether will there be any harm to its eyes if I continue to use eye drop.The real  weird thing is,it won't really sleep much nowadays.

what species is it? i think you need to consult a vet asap that does not sound healthy, also I don't think bread is a satisfactory food for any tortoises, do you feed it anything else too? my tortoises diet is 90% dandelions as that is what they need for nutrients and vitamins. What kind of habitat do you have it in and is there any heat and light source??

and I dont know about the eye drops but unless it was prescribed by a vet i wouldnt use it until you have had some advice and taken your tortoise to see one, there is a list on this website depending on where you live, if there are none near you someone else on here may be able to recommend someone

I'd be careful giving so many dandelions, they need a varied diet and as dandelions are diuretic, I would make sure it is well hydrated and change the diet ASAP to a more varied weed diet.

Not sure what species you are referring to but bread should never be fed to tortoises, they need a varied weed diet. Have a look at a good varied diet here www.tortsmad.com/diet.htm I would book your tortoise into a good reptile vet ASAP Eye drops, not intended for tortoises should not be used as the problem needs to be found first.

I've never been told too many dandelions are bad for a tortoise! I bathe him regularly and see him drink so he's definitely hydrated but in hibernation at the moment. His diet has been like that for years and his faeces always looks normal i've had it examined when he went to the vets for a check up in the summer.

I tried growing a selection of weeds from a seed mix I bought but nothing really happened, hoping to try again with it this year but otherwise theres not really access to anything that I can't buy as I know some plants look really similar and I would hate to give him something that could harm him

First time for everything I guess ;)  Too many of any weeds is bad as the diet needs to be varied. Dandelions are a good foodstuff but so many are def not a good thing and diuetic foods can casue problems with kidneys, bladder and heart. It can take many years to kill a tortoise through poor diet alone, so it's not something that is easily picked up on. The appearance of faeces are nothing to go by I'm afraid. Not sure what the vet check up was for, but nothing would show by looking at faeces, unless bloods, faecals and swabs were done ;)

Have a look at the tortoise nutrition group on yahoo groups - they will answer diet questions far more thoroughly than can be done here.
