Endangered Tortoises Need Your Help! Posted: 27/08/2013 by Desert Rescue
EXTREMELY URGENT: Please read, sign, and SHARE!
Desert Rescue Animal Sanctuary, like the rest of the general public , found out Sunday that the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center has decided to close its facility in 2014 due to lack of Federal funding. ( http://rt.com/usa/desert-tortoises-euthanize-nevada-024/ ) This facility is home to 1400+ Mojave Desert Tortoises which were displaced over the years, mostly from construction sites. Due to the closure it is the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center and BLM's plan to euthanize over half of these harmless and endangered creatures - which they ironically were organized to protect.
Our rescue, (Desert Rescue Animal Sanctuary) which has no connection to the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center, has been working feverishly ever since to try and create a solution to save these animals. Over the past couple of years our sanctuary has been taking in abandoned, injured and found tortoises from private individuals who have told us the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center was no longer accepting them and turned them away. We ask that the public please visit and sign the petition that was launched on Change.org (http://www.change.org/petitions/bureau-of-land-management-cease-plans-to-euthanize-desert-tortoises?share_id=JINZBRLlSK&utm_campaign=twitter_link&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition ), asking the state of Nevada to seek an alternate method to keep the facility open. We are personally contacting the Governors' office as well as local News stations, and will continue to seek a swift resolution to this tragic decision. Please feel free to check back with us often for updates at desertrescue.org
