Which weeds??
Posted: 28/10/2014 by IMB750

Hello all I have brought a Horsefield hatchling it is 4 months old. Everything is going great I have a custom made tortoise table uvb light ect but the problem is I am struggling to find natural weeds to feed him-her. I am rearching each plant before I feed her-him but I am getting very confused 1 site says a plant is fine yet another is saying it is harmful which is worrying me and as a result I am now only picking dandelions and dead nettle which is not varied enough long term. Is there a book or preferably a web site that list good food??. I have looked at the tortoise table link on this site but the problem is the pictures are limited along with the other information and there are many very similar looking plants to those listed some of which are harmful.

                Thanks any input is appreciated.

Hello,

Click on "Links" again - tlady site - you can buy seeds to sow now & place on a window sill.
Lin also gives A1 advice.

Tom

Thank you for the reply. I will take a closer look later my work web server has restrictions on it so I'm unable to open the links at the moment.

                      Thanks again Ivan.

I have now ordered some specialist tortoise seed and intend to grow my own food so I know what I am feeding is correct and not harmful. Also on another subject I have been in contact with other tortoise owners online and received some negative feedback about buying a horsefield tortoise I'm not sure why this is???. I would have thought whatever breed you own there are going to be problems with keeping them in this country and it is down to the owner to fill as many gap's in it's well-being and provide the best possible environment for it regardless of which breed you choose.

Hello Ivan,

If it is from a breeder that's fine.
The problem is that 99.9% of horsfields (or any other species) in the pet trade are imported.
Some are bred in 'farms' in very poor conditions, but most horsfields are wild caught, thus it is unethical to buy them.
Pet traders say that they are "from breeders" but generally their interest is purely profit.

I can see that your standards are high & I've no doubt that your tort. will have the best of care.

Best wishes,
Tom

Thanks for that I intend to do my best. I did buy my tortoise from an independent private breeder and see both mum and dad who both looked well cared for and from my little knolage healthy.
