Tortoise coughing?
Posted: 14/01/2010 by Supertack

I've had two 6/7month old herman tortoises for just over a month and they seem to have been getting along just fine. Its only recently I heard a squeak come from the table, i checked it out and they were both fine. Later on I was watching them again and one of them did something that looked like a cough with the sqeaking noise again, over the past day or two this tortoise has also grow slightly less active aswell, I'm abit worried. Does anyone know whats up?

Hiya,

May I ask where you got them from, whether their noses are dryand whether you have had their stool samples checked for worms please?

I bought them off a lady in oxford who cares for them for a breeder. I havent had it checked, no. Should I? They seem very healthy when i recieved them, how do they get worms?

Hi, they can get worms from the food they eat if not washed, also if from a pet shop they would be passed around from tort to tort.  In some cases the torts mother could have passed them on.  It is recommended to have a check, you dont have to take the torts just drop a sample off and they will let you know the results and administer the worm treatment if necessary.

Let us know how you get on, regards Vivienne

Right, I'll try and find a sample then. I will let you know, thanks.

Great, dont forget it needs to be a fresh sample, pop it in a sandwich type bag is the easiest!

Good luck, Vivienne
