How to over winter
Posted: 22/09/2011 by df

Hi Chaps,

My Hermans , Mrs Brown, has been ill - lost weight and generally lathargic from July to now, has been to vet who wormed her, and does seem a little better, but is still not pooing regularly, so i was thinking it might be better not to hibernate her this year, but i'm not sure what that entails, does it just mean that i give her less to eat, but keep her temps in  her house the same, or is there more to it...

All advice greatly appreciated, she is 3 years old, is about 12cm long and weighs about 359g, do you think over wintering her is the better option, or would she be ok to hibernate,

Many thanks

Debs

Hi Debs
Personally I would not hibernate her, get her back to good health where you feel more comfortable with. It just means keeping the temps and food going as usual, so that her system does not start to slow down. Have you hibernated her previously?

Thanks Jane,

i have hibernated her for the last two winters, and each time she did really well, slept soundly for 11 weeks last year, and was full of beans when she woke up, but she is deffo not herself at the moment so i will keep her awake this year, she is not eating very much now, and seems to want to sleep all the time, i'm hoping that by regulat bathing, and keeping her warm she will be ok, but she is only pooing a little bit , and its not regular, 4 tiny amounts since 2 Sept, do you think this is ok, she wee's ok, no urates, and looks bright eyed and is walking ok, but very worried about the lack of poo....  Click and drag me down to the editor

Hi
My keya done this and I gave her two baths a day with quite warm water, and fed her Aloe Vera which is a good laxative, you could also give opuntia that is another one. Maybe if she hasn't passed any urates in a few days time and especially after the baths, maybe a trip to the vet just to get her checked over
