when eating, or soon after, Leopolds eyes bulge, a pink fleshy lump protrudes from the inner eyelid corner blocking his eyes. He rubs the lump with his front legs and they go back in towards the nose. took him to vet who prescribed antibiotic drops which i'm giving but still really worried. what could be causing the bulging, it doesn't look like simple conjunctivitis to me.

Hi there. Eye problems are usually a result of: external infection, particle abrasion or vitamin deficiency. Over the years I have treated terrapins and tortoise of several owners by giving 2-3 drops of cod liver oil directly into the mouth. One terrapin brought to me had had swollen closed eyes for over a month when I saw it. Within 48 hours of delivering cod liver oil, eyes opened and it was feeding again. Similarly I have treated tortoises. You need a helper to drip in the oil while you hold mouth open...not easy with large torts. You might also hand feed dosed treats, but in my experience the smell of fish oil puts them off thei food. (Me too!) I have tried to attach pics of an old tort I rehomed last year. He had eye issues, in the form on swollen, puffy lids and ever so slightly cloudy eyes. He was "oiled" for two weeks and has no issues now. I do hope pictures have attached. I am not very IT literate. Tell us how you get on...maybe you could post a photo, and let us have a look at the problem. Regards, David nr York

Thank you for your advice, I think he might be vitamin deficient, will try to drop cod liver oil into mouth when he yawns, he is only about 2 yrs old and yawns often on waking. Will carry on with eyedrops too. Your photo attachment worked, I will try and post one but don't hold your breath, definitely IT illiterate!
