has anyone ever heard of the tortoise centre in Basildon Essex and what sort of reputation they have

Hmmm can I say in response that actions speak louder than words, and I am silent!
Try a reputable UK breeder, they don't do christmas special offers, a tortoise is for life and beyond.
Sorry such a short to the point reply, but better I keep it that way.

thank you for your reply, we are going into this for the long term with having a tortoise, but as we are new to this we signed up to this forum to get advise on how best to go forward in getting a new adition to our family.

i dont mean to sound rude, but i thought the idea of forums was for support and advice i asked a general question, about somewhere and the comment i think i remain silent aint all that good, and perhaps given better response would have been where to get a tortoise may be more helpful.
may i also point out that as i stated this was our first time in getting a tortoise, i would ask that question and the fact i asked before buying should show that we are wanting to do this right way. but hay ho guess i was wrong as asking seems to of been treated and judged without even saying i was going to buy from their.

I can honestly say they are the last place I personally would buy a tortoise from, seemingly many others feel the same.
If you take a look on the left under buying a tortoise there is a list of UK Breeders that we have verified as genuine UK breeders. They will provide genuine UK bred healthy tortoises and will offer the very best advice, unlike some dealers who will advise you to place a tortoise in a vivarium and they will probably try and sell you other expensive inappropriate items too:-(
I would recommend either Hermanns, Spur-Thighed Tortoises or marginated tortoises for the UK.
