Moisture in Hibernation Box Posted: 29/12/2012 by Bernie040904 |

Hi, it is my first year for hibernating my hermanns I am using the fridge method with temp at 5o and following all the guidance. I am using soil and sand mix for the substrate. My question is, that the soil seems very moist and is making tort damp and condensation on her box ( which has plenty of air holes.) I am assuming it is not good for her to be wet. She has been hibernating for a week. Should I change her eddying to shredded paper? Many thanks

I would prepare a less damp substrate, but not shredded paper, as it draws moisture away from the shell and can cause too much weight loss. When tortoises hibernate outdoors, they get pretty damp underground, so unless excessive, a little condensation will not do any harm.

Thank you. I have put her in some drier soil/sand mix. There is no more damp on her shell, but still got a little moisture. Thank you for your help.

No problem, just keep an eye on weight, but I would bet there will be minimal weight loss, which is good ;)
