Hi all we have recently got a horsfield tortoise she is about 3 yrs old, she is on a tortoise table could someone tell me what temp she needs under basking lamp and in the room we dont have heating on at home during the day and room temp is about 14c is this ok any advice would be much appreciated | |

He/she needs 30-32 degrees undern the hot spot and ambient room temps elsewhere. The lamps need to be on to mimic daylight hours. UVB is also critical, especially in winter when indoors. She needs deep soil to dig into in order to thermoregulate properly. Hope this helps Sue | |

Thanks Sue, i am going to get some top soil or similar to go on her table to bury into, the temp is right under lamp, she dosnt seem to be doing alot of moving about. | |

If she is new to you and the enclosure, she may well be quiet for a time. Also, remember that it is winter and normally she would be hibernating, so will be well aware of the shorter days, even if you keep the lights on for longer. It's best not to feed enough for them to gain weight over winter, just to keep them ticking over. In spring she will become more lively and be actively seeking out food. Obviously if she stops feeding altogether you will have increase background temps to see if this helps, but otherwise it all sounds perfectly normal ;) Take care Sue | |
