2 Hermann's tortoises
Posted: 08/02/2013 by wilsonathome

We have 2 Hermann's tortoises. Bam Bam (male) and Pebble (female) both approx 7yrs old. The female has been attacked by a dog in the past and has some marks on her shell and other than that they are both healthy. Their owner is no longer able to care for them but wishes them to stay together with a larger group of Hermann's. They will need to go to a home where they will have a suitable diet. If you are interested in applying for these 2 tortoises, please download and complete an application form supplying as much detail as possible together with up to date photos.

Hello,

I have a really suitable home which they would fit right into if you need any images of the accomedation which would be offered to your two tortoises. Pebbel and Bam Bam would fit right in to my home they would have plenty of attention throughout the day. Your tortoises would be offered a suitable diet. I am really intrested in the two hermanns that you have and i would love to hear back from you. There enclosure is most of the garden actually all the garden. The garden is very tortoise proof i have offered my home to tortoises for six years and tortoises in the past have enjoyed it. The tortoises that i have had in the past are from my friends which have been on holiday. I have had experiences with hermanns, spur-thighed and horsefield tortoises, my concerventry for the last six years is not a large indor enclosure. I have a tortoise of my own called Gungidink which is a spur-thighed tortoise if you would recormend for me to keep these tortoises apart that is what will happen but in the past Gungidink has got on well with hermann tortoises. I cannot wait to hear from you.

Kind Regards

Hi i am going to be very contraversial here. I do not believe tortoises should be fostered in another environment. It takes time for a tortoise to establish territory and is very distressing to be moved to an alien environment for short periods. I also disagree with keeping different breeds of tortoise. I am a hermanns keeper. Males and females of excellent health. Females separate from the males. Pictures/ any other info please let me know. Happy to rehome your tortoises into my group.

Hello,

I totally agree with the accomodation will be totally different but tortoises will agust to there enviroment from there old enviroment. like the previous post i do totally agree they should not mix at all Gungidink is a tortoise that i brought from a website 19 years ago on the tortoise ad it said that he was a hermanns after a while i decided to other my home to tortoises (Hermanns) and i have othered my home to four hermanns at the moment it took a while to get use to gungidink which i thourght was normal but it wasnt i spoke to someone about tortoises to gain more knowledge they said that Gungidink was not a hermanns he was a spur thighed but now after six years they are now getting on fine.

I do totally agree so i have one spur-thighed and four hermanns two females and two males.

I would like to offer my Home to these two tortoises BamBam and Pebbles because i think that they would fit right in with our group of four hermanns.

Can't wait to hear from you.

Kind Regards,

Stacey Endres

Hi Thornle1212:-)
I don't find your views controversial at all. It's not a fostering program, but an adoption program and we are looking for permanent homes.:-)
It is, as you outlined, very difficult to keep more than 1 species of tortoise, unless good sized indoor and outdoor facilities can be provided for each species in a manner where it doesn't affect their quality of life (i.e. not squashing them all in to accommodate the different species). It is far batter to keep one species and have the complete run of the whole of the indoor and outdoor accommodation and also minimise the risk of cross-infection. We always vet homes and take into account whether the applicant is suitable. Heated accommodation is a must. Many say they take their tortoises into a conservatory when it gets cold - but what we look for is a home where a tortoise can choose when it wants to move inside into heated accommodation and when it wants to move outside.

If you are interested in providing a tortoise a good home details of our Rehoming Service and a Registration Form can be downloaded here:-

http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/131.asp

If you have any problems downloading the form, please e-mail us at rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk and we will send you a copy in e-mail format. As part of our rehoming process we invariably have to send photos of any would-be set-ups to the current keeper, so we would require photos of both indoor and outdoor set-ups with completed the Registration Forms please.

Once you have registered, details of tortoises available can be found on:-

Our Website:-

Once your registration form and photos have been submitted, if you’d like to be considered to rehome any tortoise in particular, please e-mail rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk giving details of the tortoise/tortoises you would like to be considered to rehome.

Hi Stacey,

Lots of people who have applied have said the same:-) though I understand you are installing heating in your shed which is great. Many have also said they have a shelter for their tortoises (a dog kennel type of set-up) - as tortoises cannot raise their body temperature physiologically as we do (i.e. they need an external heat source to raise their body temperature), a dog kennel set-up has extremely limited benefits. The problem is that we have tortoises in the UK that have evolved over millions of years to step out into the warm whenever they want because of the climate they come from. Without artificial heating, tortoises cannot live a fulfilled life because they cannot raise their body temperature as and when they see fit. For us to decide when they should be moved into the warm is flawed as they are the only ones who can manage their heat correctly; e.g. to digest food, fight off infections etc.

Hi Stacey,

Please don't use sand. If you place tortoises on sand alone it can compact in the gut.
Soil is best

-Buy Egyptian Tortoise online. The Egyptian Tortoise makes a suitable pet for someone that does not have as much space to house larger tortoises.

Marginated Tortoise for sell. This species is the largest European breed reaching 12-14 inches long.
Marginated Tortoises like to dig and spend lots of time outside whenever possible, especially when it is warm and sunny. It is best to house them outside if you have the space.

-Available Pancake Tortoise for sell. Their speed makes them a very fun pet tortoise!
A small species, usually growing to 7 inches long, they do not need much space

- Purchase Leopard Tortoise with us .The Leopard Tortoise is the second-largest species native to Africa and the fourth largest tortoise in the world. They are 17 inches long and weigh up to 40 pounds.
Because of their large-size, they must be kept in an outdoor enclosure at least 80 square feet. If they are to be housed indoors, they can take up a whole room.
They need an average enclosure temperature of 80-90°F, and they do not tolerate moist conditions.

-Healthy Red-Footed Tortoise for sale. This is a medium-sized tortoise, growing no longer than 14 inches long.
The Red-Footed Tortoise is relatively inexpensive and has a curious nature making them very suitable for beginners.

-Are you searching for  Hermann’s Tortoise ? These tortoises are unique for their single, horn-like claw found at the tips of their tails.
They must be housed in an outdoor warm, environment, and should have at least 16 square feet of space. To best mimic the natural Mediterranean environment, the ideal temperature for their enclosure is 70℉-80℉, with UVB light and a basking spot.

-Lovely Indian Star Tortoise available for sale . Despite being very beginner friendly, their export status makes them the most expensive breed in this list. It is key to get your tortoise from a trusted, captive breeder.
Indian Star Tortoises are the same size as the Greek Tortoise, growing to 12 inches. What makes this tortoise a great beginner pet is their adaptability to survive in different humidity levels

-Sulcata Tortoise is also available for sale in larger quantities .The Sulcata Tortoise, found in the Sahara Desert, is one of the largest tortoise species in the world.
This giant tortoise can reach a whopping 30 inches in length and weigh over 100 pounds. Do not let their large size intimidate you, they still make a great beginner tortoise, just as long as they are not handled frequently!
As with the Russian Tortoise, the Sulcata likes burrowing and digging. They are also like most tortoises on this list as they readily eat grass, lettuce and leaves.

-Russian Tortoise for sale . They are a very popular pet tortoise in the United States. These tortoises can live for more than 40 years and prefer to live in warm outdoor enclosures. If they are housed indoors, they should be kept at room temperature and have a hot basking area, UVB light, and 30%-50% humidity.
This Tortoise is hardy and has an ability to adapt to different temperatures which makes them easy-to-care for beginners.
An enclosure of 8 square feet is suitable provided it is secure. These tortoises are burrowers and may try to dig at the corners of their enclosure. They have an ability to hibernate and dig underground when temperatures get too cold or hot

- Greek Tortoise lovers, we have Greek tortoises for sale in bulk. Like the Russian, they are one of the most popular pet tortoises.
They are easy to identify because of their domed shell and golden to black color patterns. The Greek Tortoise earned its alternate name, the Mediterranean Spur-Thighed Tortoise, from its characteristic “spurs” on either side of its tail.
Greek Tortoises do not grow more than 10 inches long and although they are small can live up to 50 years!
