Im currently at college and having to do an assignements on a tortoise, why is the white of the eye never seen?

Hmm now there is a question, that will have us all working our brains, first one back to base........

Well here we go.. that part of the eye is called sclera and in reptiles horses etc it is black to protect the eye from damage of UV light.

Any advances????
