Elwood needs company Posted: 12/05/2013 by Elwoodsmum
Hi there, I am based in west Wales and took in a tortoise that a lady could no longer look after, he has a greenhouse to himself, I have bought him ornament tortoises for company but it's not the same as interacting with the real thing. I am interested in opening my greenhouse to give shelter to any tortoise in Wales who needs a home. I provide daily warm baths, weight checks and a wide variety of foods and health supplements, kind of a tortoise spa. Please bare me in mind if anyone knows of a tortoise in need in my area. Thank you

Hi there. Have you already registered with TPG by completingforms available in rehoming section? The admin for this site deal personally with every offer and request. Registration is a must. Actually, it is not quite as simple as it first seems, rehoming tortoises. It may well be that you are aware of the following points already (sorry if you are), but other readers may find this to be new information... A greenhouse is useful as PART of the living area for a tortoise, but there must be uncovered areas too to allow natural u/v light to reach tortoise shells. There are some set-ups to look at in the photo gallery. That is one point, but not the only consideration. You must not mix different types of tortoise otherwise they could infect each other, and lead to fatal diseases. In addition, even if you do manage to acquire another beastie, it ought to be housed separately in quarantine for a season to ensure it is in good health and will not infect your current healthy tortoise. It really is amazing how much there is to consider when keeping tortoises. I am glad you are hooked, and already caring for one tortoise! They are addictive to many of us, but just be wary about the infection risks as I would hate you to unwittingly cause problems for any of your potential charges. Good luck with your quest, and in the meantime have a really good browse at all the great info in the links on the LHS of this page. Let's all hope the weather picks up soon and our beasties enjoy some sun and warmth. Regards, David nr York
