My tortoise has escaped and has been missing now for 24 hours. Does anyone know if they tend to head south? I do not know in which direction to begin to look - we are almost surrounded by woods.It's not looking good.

Hello,
Yesterday was cooler than of late, in many areas, so I doubt if it has moved far.
The best time to look is when you anticipate it would be warm enough to become active & looking for food in the morning.
Similarly in the afternoon.
It could go in any direction.
You don't give it's age, but adults need a 30cm high enclosure, on as large an area as possible.
