Am I a suitable owner for a tortoise? Posted: 18/05/2014 by Stanisla |

Hello, Firstly, I want to thank you for such a great website! So packed with useful information. I'd like to have a young tortoise (Hermann) as a pet. I spend pretty much all my time at home (I'm a freelance graphic designer and textile artist working from home) and I think tortoise might be just a perfect companion for me. My concern is if I myself would be a good owner for a tortoise? I live in the apartment in London and I don't have a garden to set the outdoor accommodation. Maybe I'll move to a place with a garden next year, but it's not yet certain. I'll be able to take it to the park (I have plenty in a few minutes walk distance from my place) daily, but it would live in a 24x16 inches tortoise table (with lamps, shelter and mesh lid) indoors all year round. Will this be enough to keep it healthy and happy? If so, is there any Hermann breeders located not far from London? Thank you, Stanisla

Hello Stanisla, I regret to say that the answer is no. Hermann's need an outdoor space of their own, from Spring to Autumn, in all but the very worst of weather. Visits to the park are no substitute. I put 2 day old babies outside in half decent weather, it is far more beneficial than sitting around under artificial lights. By the time they are 5, they need an area of at least 15 sq mtr - 2x1mtr (2sq mtr, for the avoidance of doubt) pet trade 'runs' are totally inadequate. The time to start is when you have a garden. Best wishes, Tom
