Can't open eye
Posted: 31/05/2014 by Racheal

Hi ,

I have just join this group to seek for some advice about my tortoise. I just found out this morning that one of my tortoise's eye is not opening. Until afternoon , his eye had opened but I saw some thing like a white/transparent sheet in the eye , something similar to cataract , but I am not sure. Is there any advise that you can give me in this situation? I will post a picture when my tortoise's eye is close. Hope you can help me with it.
Thank you
Racheal

Hello,

Did you buy this animal & were you told that it is a tortoise ?

Eye problems are serious & need urgent treatment.
What is your nearest town ? It may be possible to find your nearest specialist vet, if you live in the UK.

Regards,
Tom

Is a reply a bit too much trouble ?

Your 'tortoise' is a freshwater terrapin, of the genus Trachemys, commonly known as 'sliders'.

The TPG is a tortoise site, but may be able to find you a special it vet.
The problem will almost certainly have been caused by improper care. This is hardly surprising if you think it's a tortoise. Your other one will get the same problem without remedial action.

For husbandry information, go to the Tortoise Trust site & click on "Articles."
Spend time looking for appropriate information.
