I have a horsefield tortise called george I have been reading a lot of things on this forum and I just want to check it is okay to use a large indoor rabbit cage to make his new home instead of having him in a varium. He loves to be out through the day he actually lets him self out and goes walk about in the house. And I just want to check it's okay to use top soil inside his cage. Will I also be able to attach his UVA lamp and his basking lamp as well. All information appreciated. Thank you. Jaganne.

Hello Jaganne, Almost anything is better than a vivarium! Yes, large rabbit cages are ok for small tortoises & you can attach UVB bulbs etc.. [They are far too small for rabbits, but the pet trade are happy to sell them.] Your tortoise should be outside in summer & if adult (or sub-adult) needs an enclosure of at least 5 x 3 metres. Horsfields should be hibernated. Have a good read through the Box titled "The Tortoise / Incl. Care Sheets." Regards, Tom
