to hibernate or not
Posted: 28/07/2014 by jill garner

Hi all you Tort fans

I am in a bit of a quandary about the age old hibernation question. I have a Herman Tort for 2 years, he was 2 when I got him and now he is 4.  As yet I have not hibernated him, he has been in a  tortoise table with heat and light. I have let him in the summer months most days and he has been quite happy, However this year he seemed restless and fretting so I have let him most days for longer periods and sometimes all night and he seems happier for it.

I suppose my question is -  should I hibernated him this year ? is he old enough,

If I don't then he would need to stay in the table

what your views ??

many thanks

Jill

Hello Jill,

Quite right to keep him outside at 4 years old. They need an enclosure of at least 15sqm.

Yes hibernation is a natural process for Hermanns. Perhaps start with 3 months as it's your 1st time. All the info you need can be found on the green box, titled "The Tortoise."

Regards,
Tom
