Please help me! Need information on horsefield Posted: 04/08/2014 by Shawny94 |

Hi I just got a 1 year old horsefield tortoise and I absolutely love having (him) I think it's a male lol, I have a 100W basking lamp plus a 24" UV tube the question is where should I position them, I know he must have a basking spot but what about the UV tube should I position is above his food tray so he can get the UV when eaten or should it be up the opposite end away from his tray? I have a pretty big enclosure for him and no it's not a viv, Also any tips for beginners would be helpful lol! It's great to be a part of the tort family! And I know what I can feed him and what I can't, But how much should he get fed as there is a lot of mixed opinions out there, and also I leave for work at about 7am so what should I do? Leave his lights on and give him some food and fresh water, Because he's new I am just worrying about everything the now lol! Anyways Thanks!

Hello, Click on "The Tortoise" box on the left & download a Caresheet. Where did you obtain it & what advice were you given? You will find all the info you need as you work through the boxes on the left. An outside enclosure would be good for it. Regards, Tom

Just downloaded a care sheet there thanks! I got it from a breeder up in Dunfermline and she told me I could give him food and water when I leave for work and he should be okay, She never really told me where I should position the lights apart from he should have a basking area and have a cool side to cool down in too and she also never said he had feeding times or how much he should be fed all she said was feed him what he can eat in 20 minutes. Thanks!

That's ok. It's amazing that the 'breeder' failed to supply written info.. I'm suspicious. How much did you pay ? Did you see the parents & what was the method of keeping any adults that you saw? Any other relevant facts that you can think of concerning your visit to the seller would be of interest please. Regards, Tom

I never got supplied written info but she went over a talk with me with what she recommends feeding and what temperatures the areas should be for the tortoise. There was 2 adults in a big enclosure and they were sitting under their basking light looking happy as far as I could tell, I was in and out really but everything seemed fine, I have rearranged the lighting and I am now in the process of growing weeds for my tortoise, I was worried at the start but I am starting to get the swing if things, Maybe I didn't ask the seller enough questions? I payed £75 also, Thanks for replying back to em, Sorry I took a while I have been busy :(

Thank you for the info. If they are breeding - I'd expect the adults to live outside. Not giving you written info is a joke. It seems dodgy. I'm glad you are getting more confident. Tom
