Uvb light height??
Posted: 08/08/2014 by vickyjj86

Hello everyone

From next Friday the 15th august i will be a tortoise owner..... Eekkk!
A Hermann Hatchling 6 weeks old.
So nervous but excited at the same time.
I have a question about the heating and lighting.
I currently have a Arcadia D3 combined 80 , i did at first buy the 100w but found the temp was getting to high for what the size of the table is ( 30inch l x 24inch w - just a temp until October ) and lamp arm was at its highest.
I am curious on  what height the uvb should be accessible?Just so i know sure he is getting enough uv light.
Advice would be much appreciated Click and drag me down to the editor

Hello Vicky,

About 18cm will be fine.

I put my babies outside from 2 days old. They live in small wood sided pens, 15cm high, with wire mesh on top, on close mown untreated lawn. With all those lovely weeds, I don't have to feed them. In poor weather the pens are largely covered with Plexiglass.
This works well 'til mid-September, or later in some Autumns.

If nothing else, put it outside in nice weather. Some dappled shade above is necessary, in full Sun.

Regards,
Tom
