We are looking to get one or maybe two tortoises. We'd like quite small and hardy (first time we've had them, though my father has had them and many other reptiles before so we do have an experienced owner to hand) ones so I am thinking horsfield or hermanns? Are they happier in pairs? I just assuming it is nicer for them to live that way rather than solo? Having looked at the advice I see that they need both an indoor and an outdoor enclosure, what would be the best size for them? Our garden is reasonably secure but I think it would be safer in an enclosure outside but am not sure of size, especially for two - have looked at raised flower beds and cold frames as a basis, we have a sand pit that we could adapt but I don't know if it's big enough or, if not, what size raised bed to get. Also, can they come in at night and spend nights in the indoor enclosure and days outside during summer? We live in the country and I'd worry about foxes etc - certainly wouldn't leave guinea pigs out even in a secure hutch all night due to predators. Is there any reason why the tortoises couldn't come in at night? Also, sorry if I sound like a dunce, are there any small hardy breeds that are available ethically in the UK that don't hibernate? Finally, I would prefer to re home a tortoise or pair of tortoises because they will be older (I get the impression hatchlings and juveniles are very much for those with a good deal of experience) and just because I'd like to give a home to someone who needs one rather than just going out and getting them. Some of the tortoises on your site already have a table, 2 lovely girls in Reigate specifically, so presumably in these cases you would only want photographic evidence of an outside environment? All and any advice gratefully received, always wanted a tortoise and have a son who is simply mad about animals, has a pet tortoise at school and I know would (with supervision of course) put his heart and soul into making sure it/they were the happiest little tortoises on the planet!! | |
