Constipated tortoise? Posted: 17/07/2015 by nmiddy |

I have a 7 year old Hermann, over the last 10 days he has not done a poo. He is still urinating and eating normally. He shows no signs of straining and is quite active at the moment. we try and give him a varied diet from the garden as well as greens we buy in the supermarket. We bathe him everyday and have increased that to twice a day to keep him hydrated and given him some cucumber also but still no movement. I'm wondering whether I should be getting worried or need to think about taking him to a vet? Thanks

Hi, he mainly lives inside in an enclosure. He has straw for his bedding. We don't use woodchippings or anything like that for his enclosure as the vet told us not to as he kept trying to eat it! Instead we have a mat type thing for him. Hope that makes sense, thanks

Is there some reason why your tortoise can't be kept outside ? That is where he should be living. In an enclosure of at least 15sqm. Put him in a smallish box for an hour, if he has been feeding well - you will see the result. Also don't feed items from supermarkets. Tom

Thanks for the info, we are actually looking into getting him an outdoor pen for the summer, he has now returned to normal and going regularly. Thanks for your help.
