Minimum Equipment Posted: 20/07/2015 by RuthR |

Dear all I am new to this forum. I owned a tortoise when I was child and have loved tortoises ever since. I'm thinking of possibly buying a Hermann's tortoise but wanted to find out what is the absolute minimum equipment I would need to buy for this type of tortoise. I have an unused greenhouse, which I'm hoping I can use. This has got a step so the tortoise wouldn't have free access to the outdoors. However, I'm thinking of creating a pen next to the greenhouse where the tortoise could be when the weather is fine. Is it possible to buy particular equipment for a pen? Would I need any kind of heating/lighting equipment as well and could this be kept in the greenhouse? Any type of idea on costs would be most appreciated also. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Ruth R.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your reply, which I've just managed to access! I do have an outside area next to the greenhouse although I would need to create an enclosure. I was wondering if tortoises need to be kept indoors when the weather is not as warm, and also overnight, due to potential predators. I notice that there is information on this site about various indoor and outdoor enclosures, plus tortoise tables, lamps/lighting etc. Basically I wanted to find out how much of this is essential and what would be the minimum equipment I would need to start off with. Thanks in advance. Best, Ruth

Re. in or out Ruth, it's temp. dependent. In or out at night - personal preference. Essential is a quality uvb bulb & dome fitting. Housing - avoid pet trade items & costs are £30 or less, for 2 young tort's. Tom
