Hi! I would like to buy a tortoise and want to make sure that I get him from a captive bred UK source. I don't know the difference between Herman's and horsefields and why do Herman's come with papers and the others do not. Any help and advice will be gratefully accepted. Thanks

Hello Caroline, To save a lengthy explanation, I suggest that you avoid Horsfields, unless you can find a breeder. Even so, Hermanns are a much better choice. Almost all Horsfields are imported in consignments of 1,000 or more, so illness (& worse) is common. Click on the "Buying a Tortoise" box, for a list of TPG approved breeders. Be aware that there are a lot of pretend 'breeders' around, so be sure to stick to the list. Flashy websites are a sure sign of pet dealers. Regards, Tom
