My Mediterranean Tortoise has gone into hibernation outside Posted: 06/10/2015 by Morgan.McGuire |

Ok, so pretty much my parents went on holiday in late September and we had been preparing our tortoise for hibernation. We left him the night before he should have hibernated in his cage outside and he dug underneath it and escaped which was followed by him digging in and hibernating. I have no clue where he is and even whether or not he is alive. We live in the south of Britain and have had some torrential rainfall today and I am genuinely scared. Is he alive? Will he last the winter? How do I find him? I don't know yet I have so many questions. I am so scared and in desperate need of some help!

Hello, I don't have a crystal ball, I'm afraid. September is too early for hibe. They can self-hibernate but ideally in a known place, so the site can be covered in extreme rain, & insulated in extreme cold. It should survive winter, but you will need to be vigilant in warm weather in late March, or early April. If it is found you'll need a better system next year. Regards, Tom
