What tortoise? Posted: 20/11/2015 by Gemmay |

Hi, we've just brought this tortoise off of a friend for my brother however I'm not sure what bread it is? I was told it's a 2 year old girl but again I am unsure, I'd love to know so then I can make sure I do the right thing. I've currently got her on top soil from home base with some Playsand mixed in, again hope this is ok? She has 5 claws on the front but 4 on her back legs of that helps at all. Thank you

Hello, It looks likely that it is a Sulcata. Your friend should have told you which species it is. It is a disgrace that these are permitted to be sold in the UK. As adults, they need half an acre on which to graze & 2 people to lift them. Click on "The Tortoise" box for a Care sheet. It will need a large tortoise 'table' with a 100W Megaray UVB bulb & an 8" dome fitting. Tom

Thanks Tom! Tbf the tortoise was brought for my friends daughterSo she didn't buy it herself and probably wasn't aware how big it would get. Can anyone let me know whether she is a boy or a girl? She tucks her tail away when she's walking about if that helps
