Hibernation
Posted: 05/12/2015 by Ticky

I am winding down our 6 year old Hermanns tortoise for his first hibernation. (He was a bit underweight last year) He's a good weight, and has been checked by the vet. - all OK. The vet said to wind him down to be ready for hibernation by mid-December - so we're nearly there.

My question is, will Hugo (the tortoise) automatically have gone to sleep, and have stopped moving when he is ready to be put in his box? Thanks in advance.

It will depend  entirely on temperature.

Keep careful weight records from now on, a healthy 6yr old can hibernate from mid. to late October, [seasons vary].

The best way next year is to let it continue to live outside & 'wind down' naturally in the Autumn.
