Tortoise identification - please help Posted: 15/02/2016 by davejones81 |

Hi. I'm new to the forum and looking for a little advice. Could anyone positively I.D the species please? The little fella in the photos was brought to me yesterday. From the photos I'm sure you can see he's not had the best life so far. His shell is about a foot long. He looks like my Hermann's Tortoises and that's what I believe him to be. However, his front feet only have 4 nails each and no visible place for any that may have fallen off, which would make him a Horsfield's Tortoise. He has 4 places for nails on his back feet, two nails have fallen off.

Hello, It's clearly a Hermann's. I'd estimate it's age at around 15 years. As you imply, it has been kept by absolute idiots & is in a disgraceful state. However there are many in far worse condition. It will thrive with proper care & it should be fine to hibernate it in October, keep careful weight records, as the J.R. can't be used. Regards, Tom
