Help to identify please Posted: 20/03/2016 by Daftmare |

Hi this tortoise has joined my family tonight. He was rescued by the people I got him off who've tried their best. She said his shell was soft when she got him He's been to the vet wormed etc but she felt she couldn't do her best for him. I don't know what breed he is and neither did they he's been fed on dry tortoise food kale and grass in the garden (I know :-/) As it was all a bit last minute and I haven't had chance to go hedgerow browsing for him I've offered him watercress and a bit of green cabbage but he's not touched it. Could people give me a few pointers in the right direction please. I have nutrabal (I used to have a bearded dragon) is this the correct supplement? Also I've put play sand down on the floor I'm assuming this is incorrect but what should I use? Thank you | |

Hello, It's a Hermanns. The carapace looks quite good. Use Nutrobal very sparingly. Avoid kale & other brassicas. I'd just use slightly moist garden soil as a substrate. Place it gently into tepid water, deep enough for it to submerge it's head, if it wants to do so. Do this 2 or 3 times a week. It needs to be at 28C for 8hrs a day, to stimulate feeding. It will need an outdoor enclosure of at least 15sqm (30cm high) & a good-sized night house, for when the weather warms up. Click on "The Tortoise / …." box for a Caresheet & more info..
