first timer advice please Posted: 12/05/2016 by Sinead |

Hello, I would be grateful if anyone could comment on whether our preparations to rehome an adult tortoise - preferably a Hermann or Ibera, sound appropriate for the breeds. The tortoise would be our first, so any advice would be great. We hope that the tortoise would largely be an outdoor tortoise. We have a large, enclosed south-facing garden, with no other pets. We're thinking of getting a cold frame to act like a greenhouse for extra warmth and also a wooden hutch for shelter and shade. Unfortunately our garden doesn't have electric points, so on cooler nights below 12 degrees or so, we would bring the tortoise inside to a smaller enclosure, allowing it out again in the morning. We would aim to set up a combi uv light/heater in the indoor enclosure. As for hibernation, we would seek to box hibernate as we don't have access to a second fridge. Do you think this set up would work? We obviously want to give the tortoise a long, happy & healthy life. Many thanks!

Hello, Yes that is fine as a starting plan. Click on "The Tortoise" box for more ideas re. husbandry & to read up in detail about hibernation. Regards, Tom
