New Tortoise
Posted: 27/09/2016 by CatherineLock

I have been thinking about getting a tortoise for a while and have recently done lots of research. I was going towards getting a Hermann's tortoise and having found out about the sub species was moving towards a Testudo Hermanni Hermanni. I have found a breeder but another breeder told me that Hermanni Hermanni should be avoided. Is this true? What is not suitable about a Hermanni Hermanni?

Hello,

They come from a very small gene pool in the UK, inbreeding has been common, this can have consequences.

Most become almost uniformly black. T.h.b. are far more variable, far more attractive & far more robust.

Regards,
Tom
