I have been told by many different people what to use for bedding for my new horsefield tortoise.

I have been told newspaper and shredded paperwork.

At the moment there is just paper down for him and in his bedding area there is one of those eco blocks.

I have been told unfertilised topsoil. I have also been told play sand. I am just quite confused. Please help

Use garden soil or coir. Keep either slightly moist.

Where did you get it & were you given a caresheet ?
