Assistance needed please Posted: 02/06/2017 by Tracytort |

Hi There, I am looking to get a Indian star tortoise. My kind and very handy partner is going to make me a tortoise table. I understand that the tortoise requires a reasonably big area and to start with we thought perhaps a 6 foot x 3 foot table might be a good idea. We Obviously will make an outdoor area for the nice weather seasons. I understand the tortoise will need UV b and UV A and heat. I am trying to decide upon what would be the best lamp to get. I understand that there is two ways of achieving this, either with UV for light another bulb for heat, but I have heard there is a light which combines both the light and heat together. I wonder if you could be so kind as to assist me with what I would need in order for my tortoise to be getting the correct requirements with the lighting/heat issue. Thank you.

Hello, I would urge you to reconsider your choice of species. The TPG's stance is that they are totally unsuitable for the UK. You would have a massive electric bill trying to keep these up to temp' - so consider the Earth ! Adults grow to over 1', so a "6' x 3' " table would be hopelessly inadequate. T. hermanni is a more attractive species, hardy, hibernates & thus is a much better choice. Megaray UVB bulbs give both ht & lt. Tom
