I'm not much good at maths but I can't count 9 hermanns. I get 6 and 1 Spur . They should all be OK on soil/sand mixture with daily spot cleaning and fully refreshing the substrate at least every 3 weeks. Wetting/dampening as Nina has described is the way to go to keep the dust down. Do you mean that you keep the 2 sets of 2 in the same enclosure or do you have an enclosure for each set? I don't know what your set ups are like, but could it be that your hermanns are adult and the enclosure/s is/are too small. If they wee then unless you change the substrate as regularly as I suggest or maybe sooner than that then there is a good chance you will get an odour as when they wee they do copious amounts. The other thing I just need to check is that the smell is actually coming from the substrate and not from the tortoises themselves - just trying to rule out tortoise problems here. Helen

have you read the instructions for photo uploading? If you haven't you'll find them on the left hand side of the gallery Michelle. If you've read them and still haven't been able to load the pictures click on my name tpgadmin at the top of this mail and send me your email address or phone number and I'll help you get them loaded up. Hi Michelle I've got them uploaded your pictures for you now. They are in the album 'Michelles tortoises'. The problems you were experiencing was because although you had made the pictures smaller they weren't small enough. I used VSO resizer for Windows Vista to reduce them to a size of about 300 x 200 and uploaded them 1 at a time. I'm just off to have a proper look at them now Helen

Your table tops are excellent and I absolutely love the idea of your bunk bed type set up. It was great speaking to you on the phone a few minutes ago and although we have already discussed the areas below I felt it worth repeating on here as it may be helpful for others to think about too. Your tortoises look to have plenty of room, but I was worried about the log hide in the photo where the tortoise is climbing so it's worth repeating here for other members too. If he/she is anything like my tortoises they do learn how to climb to the top of these log rolls; so I have learnt never to put them near to the side of the enclosure to prevent nasty accidents once the tortoise gets on top. I now know that your husband has made a lip around the edges to prevent this from happening. A few stones piled up or plant pots placed in the bunk beds and pots of plants with leaves that hang over the edges is an idea to give variety and to allow the tortoise somewhere to hide might be an idea. Something like a spider plant, which is non toxic might be a good plant to use. As we discussed you might like to rethink your lighting arrangement, although entirely suitable they're probably not in the best position. You will find some further helpful advice here: http://www.uvguide.co.uk/fluorescenttubeintro.htm As far as the basking bulb is concerned also try hanging it directly above the tortoises and close to the UVB source so that when the tortoise are basking they get the full benefit of the full spectrum of light. Hope this helps Helen
