Hi I am looking for a totoise, however am wondering which would be the best breed. I have always wanted a tortoise, and I am now getting round to it! Just wondering which is the best breed, I have a fair amount of grass outside, however not sure where to kept it. Any advise would be helpful! Thanks! | |

Hi, to the group.
It is best to go for a species that hibernates. Over-wintering a non-hibernating species can be expensive when they become adults - if you are to provide a large enough area for them to have a decent quality of life over the winter period. Personally I'd recommend:- Iberas - I'm a bit biased here Hermanns Marginated or possibly Horsfields - the only problem with these lively little tortoises is they do tend to not only burrow, but tunnel also and can be difficult to find at times There are species specific care sheets here:- http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/80.asp
which will hopefully help and you can view photos of the various species. Here is some information on hibernation:- http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/78.asp
There is a list of genuine UK Breeders/Hobbyists here:- http://www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/70.asp Please don't consider purchasing from a pet shop, garden centre or an internet dealers - particularly if anyone offers to post out a tortoise to you - this is an extremly bad sign. A very high number of these tortoses are imported into the UK and are often not 100% fit and well.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to post them on here.
Best Regards Darren
