This might possibly sound like a silly question but what do people think about tortoises going for outings. I ask because at the back of my house we have a play park and field and today me and my daughter had a picnic around there and we took our two horsefield tortoises with us. They appeared to enjoy the new experience. Which made a wonder if they might enjoy going to other places. What do people think.

Hi Zoe, Personally a I think it is a bit dangerous, it would only take a split second for them to disappear if you turned away for any reason, also you could not be sure an inquisitive dog would not find them attractive. If a large dog on the loose came running over, your priority would be your child, and that would leave your torts unguarded. They are safer in their enclosure at home. About 2 years ago someone took their tortoise to a park and lost it, also some people have taken theirs on holiday and they have wandered off and never seen again. Laraine

Hi Zoe, No this certainly is not a good idea. Tortoises do not take well to change and need a safe secure environment. Also a public place could have all sorts on the ground including dog mess etc. Keep them at home where they will be safer and happier. Ali

It depends really, if it was a crowded place then it is a bad idea, but if there is a relatively small amount of people and other animals, why not.
