digital thermometer v standard thermometer
Posted: 02/08/2008 by tortoise7

Hi
We are trying to get the temps correct in Keya's outdoor pen, but are getting abit confused as to which method of measurement is the more accurate to go by.
We have 2 standard thermometers that register the same temperature and one digital thermometer that registers 6 degrees more than the standard ones. The standards are standing up right against the wall and the digital probe is on the basking pad. They are all within 8" of each other. Can anyone offer advice of which ones we should go by
Thanks
Jane (again)

Hi Jane,

I would think that the temperatures are in fact different on the wall and one the basking pad. The basking pad will no doubt have absorbed some heat and will retain it, and if the digital thermometer is actually touching the pad, it's bound to be warmer. And 8" can make a difference in the temperature (well, it certainly can indoors where there is a basking light). Are the thermometers that are on the wall in the shade at all?

Hi Nina

They are not actually hanging on the wall they are free standing against the wall , but yes I get what you are saying, so maybe the digital isn't wrong which is good news

Thanks

Hi Jane,

As Nina says, you will get a difference in the temperatures depending on where you place your thermometer....those differences sound about right considering where you have placed them.

Hope that helps
