Houses of Parliament
Posted: 26/11/2009 by TPGDarren

The TPG are going to the Houses of Parliament today to discuss the importation of tortoises.
We will also be raising the manner in which tortoises are kept in pet shops prior to sale (unsuitable vivariums), the appalling advice offered and the lack of guidance and legislation protecting the tortoises whilst under the care of pet shops.

Thank You everyone for your good luck messages. The meeting went very well and Andrew Rosindell M.P. was very responsive to our concerns.
We’d just like to express our thanks for your massive support, which is really appreciated and extremely important. Hopefully, we can all pull together as individuals and work with other groups to achieve our aim to protect tortoises in the wild & to ensure the correct husbandry is available to all who not only newly acquire tortoises but for current keepers too. As we know, far too often these wonderful animals are merely treated as a commodity by dealers for financial gain, with little regard for their welfare & who maximise profit margins by selling inappropriate housing, equipment and diet related products:-(
We'll post a note, as soon as time permits this weekend regarding the meeting and thoughts on how we intend to move forward.

Thanks Again
Kindest Regards
Darren

Just to add to what Darren has written the day was absolutely amazing and we were treated like VIPs, we even sat in on a vote in the house of commons and saw Alistair Darling, Anne Widdicombe and John Prescott. We even shook hands with Ben Bradshaw (ex animal welfare minister) who was the one to push through the recent animal welfare bill (AWB) and banned the importation of birds for the pet trade after the outbreak of avian flu.  A thoroughly tiring but enjoyable day and a real eye opener.

Thank you to all our members for your ongoing support, we wouldnt be where we are now without you.

Any indication on a result from this meeting yet, or has the coming general election got all MPs more concerned with their future rather than the future of animals?

Need I ask?!?!?!
