Hey guys,

I am in the process of getting a Tortoise and trying to work out which one is best for a Newbie. I haven't had one before and was trying to decide between the Herman & the Horsfield.

Also, I have looked at the list of breeders but there doesn't seem to be anyone available relatively close to me, I'm in West London.

There is one breeder in London - Dave who has Hermans - Lives in Walthamstow.

Hi Lou and welcome to the forum. As pointed out there is one breeder on the TPG list based in London, I know two of the breeders listed in Kent and they are close to London (Sandy and Lisa).

As to choice of tortoise, I keep both Hermanns and Horsfields tortoises, both are great species and with the right care are very little trouble. I've kept Hermanns longer so I probably have a bias towards them but I find them a little more placid in each others company than Horsfields.

Testudo graeca ibera (spur thigh) is also a nice tortoise.

Much the same care has the Herman.

I have been on the website and looked at the Breeders list but can't find any within my area. The area says Kent, but a couple I have phoned live in Isle of White
