My new Tort!!!
Posted: 29/04/2010 by sky

Hi everyone, I have a new re homer, she is a HUGE Hermanns' , bless her she has had the wrong diet. Frozen pea's,fruit and salad! and she weighs in at a whooping 2.5 kilo's.

Her she is hard on the top and her underneath is spongy. I am giving her lots of sunshine outside and a weed diet, limestone flour and cuttlefish.

Any other suggestions would be great.

Hi congratulations on your new rehomer, whats her name and do you have any pics we can see of her, she certainly sounds a whopper!!

Have you sought specialist vet advice regarding the under shell, just to make sure you are doing all you can?

Regards Vivienne

If you stick with what you are doing I'm sure in time there will be noticeable improvements.
Slow growth from now on would be adviseable, though she may well be at almost full size at it is. This will ensure all the nutrients she takes on will be used to repair the poor growth rather than being used for new growth.

Hi there, just one thing to add, along with the limestone and cuttlefish, give her Nutrobol every day - this also contains Vit D which the tortoise needs to covert calcium in the diet to healthy shell and bone.  Sunshine is great, and make sure you have a good quality UV light for the times she is indoors.

How old is she BTW?

Hi Sky,

Mixing lettuce with weeds is OK as it will help maintain hydration, though try and use a good quality lettuce such as Romaine. Do you know how old she is?

Here's a photo of a huge old Hermanns I took some years ago - now she was huge:-)
Though much older and would have no doubt spent a number of years in the wild before bing taken into captivity and shipped to the UK pre-1984

OMG - I've not heard of a tortoise that young attaning such a weight....ever. Quite frankly they would usually develop serious problems growing so fast. Have you any photos at all please?

Hi Darren, hope this works, not a very good pic, will try and take some more tomorrow, with something next to her so you can get more of the size.
