Hi, I have just aquired a Tortoise, my sister got him/her from a friend who is moving abroad and (she knows that I have wanted one for a long time). I don't know anything about him/her, age, breed. He/She came with a home 2ft x1ft 3, Komodo complete holistic food,(pellets) coconut substrate and a sun glo 50watt lamp.I need all the advice I can get as this has took me by suprise, but a fantastic one.I have booked an appointment with a vet for Tuesday to establish the above . He has been outdoors today and is quite fast and so amusing. Do I only put him out if the sun is out? Grateful for any advice. Nell.

Hi Nell, Congratulations on taking in your new tort. 

I think most of your questions have been answered on other posts.  It would be nice if you could post some pictures and we could help you identify what type of tort and possible sex.

You can put him out on sunny days it will do him the world of good.  Just make sure the garden/pen is secure and there is a hut for him to go into for shelter from sun or rain!  Ideally, you could provide him with a cold frame which heats up quicker and will warm him up or a heated hut or greenhouse.
