wet nose and a sneeze Posted: 19/05/2010 by m.bagley |

Hi
I recently posted a msg about enuice staying in her house all of the itme. She is still doing this but today i heard her make a sneezy nose two times and when i checked on her she had a wet nose. I havn't seen of heard anything else since. She is still very active when she is out in her pen and is eating fine. I have also been carrying on giving her daily baths. I wondered if it was her bedding? Currently she has hemp. Does any one have any ideas? There aren't any reptile vets in sheffield, where i live, and i don't drive so don't know what im going to do if she needs to go to a vets. Kind regards Melodie

Hi Melody Firstly I would remove the hemp, it can be quite dangerous to torts, as it is sharp and can cause all sorts of health problems. You can replace it with strips of news paper (not anything from glossy magazines where the print fumes are high) or I have used Kitchen Towel and cut it into strips. You may need to check that your tort has not got something in it's nose which is causing the sneezing. Jane H

I didn't think hemp was dangerous. The shop i got my tortoise from (the tortoise shop) gave me the hemp and told me it was the most appropriate things for them as well as soil and sand. Anyway, i will remove it immediately and see what happens. Thank you. Melodie

Hi Melodie, its worth changing the substrate, just to see if the runny nose clears, you could also as tempory measure medical measure put the tort on a disused towel or puppy training mat. Watch the tort closely, if it doesnt improve on changing substrate, then you need to get the tort to a vet before it gets any worse for a course of antibiotics. Please let us know how you get on.
