help with outside heat / light Posted: 14/06/2010 by Suex |

Dear All I am hoping to have a rescue tortoise soon - a horsfield if possible. I have a wooden enclosure for the summer months with a roof made of wood, wire and glass areas. Do I need electric light and heat lamps and how do I make sure the electrics are safe outside ? Thanks for any advice Sue

Hi Sue, have a look at our care sheets on the Horsfield, on the lefthand side under 'tortoise' also have a look at the photo gallery for examples of outside enclosures. With Horsfields they are great escape artists digging and climbing, so make sure the outdoor pen is very safe. During the cooler months and some nights the tort will need extra warmth from a heated kennel/hutch or shed/garage/greenhouse. Regarding the electrics it is best to get a qualified electrician to run electrics to the housing to ensure that it is safe for you the tort and from the weather. Let us know how you get on, regards Vivienne

Hi Vivienne Thanks for the advice. Would it be all right to have the tort outside in the day in summer and pop it inside with heat lamp on one side of the enclosure at night? Sue

Hi Sue, yes that would be fine, the torts need to be out as much as possible in the warmer months Regards Vivienne
