Female Hermanns under treatment for rehoming
Posted: 02/09/2008 by TPGDarren

This is Betty. She came to the TPG’s attention when we were contacted by a young veterinary nurse from Kent. Betty was attacked by a pet dog. Unfortunately treatment was not sought immediately following the attack, resulting in the wounds becoming so badly infected it was close to septicaemia setting in. Sometime later the owner took Betty to the vets. Realising the cost of the treatment the owner said they could not afford the vet bills and handed over the tortoise to the vets who kindly agreed to treat the animal at their own expense.

Whilst Betty is improving, there is still some way to go. We are inviting applications to rehome this tortoise, though it must be understood that there will be ongoing treatment. The ideal solution would be to find a home near Footscray, Kent so she can resume her ongoing treatment there. Although the practice that is treating her also has other surgeries in Mottingham, Eltham, Belvadere, Bexley, Longfield and Swanley.

The current treatment is :-

She's being bathed once daily and then flamizole cream is being applied.  Then every 3 days she needs an injection of Fortum (antibiotic).  She's doing very well, though this treatment will have to continue for a couple of months. This should be taken into consideration before any application is made for this tortoise. Unfortunately we do not have funds at this time to pay for the treatment.

If you feel you can offer a loving home then please complete an application form which you can download from the re-homing page of the web site which you will find in the green column to the left of this editing page.  .

If you have previously sent in an application form, let us know when you contact us, and tell us of any changes that might have taken place since you submitted the form.

Please do not post your request to re-home on this forum. All applications regarding these tortoises should be headed “Hermanns under treatment” and either sent by email to:
rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk or alternatively you can send by post to The TPG,
PO Box 1484,
Oxford,
OX3 3BQ.

We are receiving a growing number of rehoming enquiries and we are inviting people to make donations for the treatment of injured & sick tortoises, the likes of Betty. The TPG is run 100% by volunteers and every penny is put back into tortoise welfare.

Hi Pam,

To be honest I don't know and it's difficult to tell as I've not actually seen her - only from photos.

We are pleased to announce that we have managed to find Betty a very good new home and the new keeper is happy to continue to meet Betty’s veterinary expenses.

We are also in a position to cover the young nurse’s veterinary expenses, she paid for the latter treatment from her own funds, from kind donations made to the TPG. A Huge thank you to those who have donated to help with Betty’s expenses.

We are receiving a growing number of rehoming enquiries and we are inviting people to make donations for the treatment of injured & sick tortoises, the likes of Betty. The TPG is run 100% by volunteers and every penny is put back into tortoise welfare & the promotion of good tortoise husbandry.

Hi Karen,

That is so kind of you to offer! And how lovely to have a 50 year old whiteii! It would be great to see photos of her (you can put them in the Members Photo Gallery).

If you would like to re-home a tortoise, you can download our re-homing application form (click on the Rehoming tab in the column on the left-hand side of the page) and send it to rehoming@tortoise-protection-group.org.uk
