Hi My tortoise is a horsefield and he is about two years old. Today I noticed that when he weed there was pink in it. This is the first time it has happened and his utrates are normally a creamy colour. I am very worried I have given him another bath and some cucumber. With it being Saturday afternoon there are no vets open so i have to wait until monday before I can get him checked out.

Hi, sometimes the urates can be a pinkish colour, particularly so if the diet consists of a lot of dandelion leaves. It could also indicate a little dehydration, make sure the urates arn't gritty, they should be creamy consistancy and white-ish in colour. If they are gritty and pinkish increase the baths and give some cucumber in the food as this is made up of mainly water and will help to rehydrate. If you are worried by all means visit the vet. Hi thank you so much for your reply it has put my mind at ease. I`ve bathed him again this morning and there was still the pinkish colour but my husband did say that he gave him a little too much carrot on Tuesday so maybe it could be that. Thanks again Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, be careful about giving too much carrot and it is high in vitamin A. I only give this grated on there food on a very occasional basis to give a little boost of this vitamin. Here is a link to an excellent plant site dedicated to what is and is not suitable for tortoise food http://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/site/tortoise_home_1.asp I hope this helps, regards Vivienne
