Dreaded Hibernation Posted: 25/11/2010 by KNS |

We have been winding our girls (Spur thighs) down ready for hibernation, but we are a bit confused about when to start checking their weight loss. We know it is 10%, but when do we start keep an eye on it. From wind down or is first day of hibernation?
Why we are asking is because one of girls has already lost 97g over the last three and a bit weeks (hibernation is this Saturday) and she started at 1068g, so only got a few grams to go. So if it is from wind down then this is not good. This is her first one, as she is 4 years old. But if do start checking on the day of hibernation, and then it is ok?
Any advice would be grateful.

I think you should not hibernate tortoise who lost 97 g over the last 3-4 weeks. It is a lot. This is odd. The tortoise may be sick. The tortoise should loose weight during hibernation not wind down period. Good luck | |
