Tortoise trots
Posted: 26/01/2011 by paul W

Hi everyone

Our not so little Mediterranean Spur Thigh is up out of hibernation and is very lively. First urates within two days, first poop after 8 days.

Poop started out dark, moist but solid but has degenerated into liquid slurry over the last couple of days. At the moment he's on a diet of pot grown flat lettuce and wild rocket (until dandelions rally to something more 'edible' than they are at the moment).

Pre-supposing it's the excessive water in the lettuce causing this problem does anyone have any suggestions for things I can add to his diet until the wild food that will help bind him a little more ?

Also, as I've a hermann's due out of hibernation in the next fortnight, any suggestion for things that will keep him healthy as well ?

Hope everyone else's post-hiberantion problems are simple ones too.

Paul

Hi Paul,

How are the stools today?

It may be worth getting a sample checked by a vet to be on the safe side.

There are a couple of good websites here that list wild plants & other foods that will benefit your tortoise.

http://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/site/tortoise_home_1.asp

If he's eating it's a good sign. Are there any other visible signs that might indicate problems at all; is he active, eyes clear?.....................

Are your Hermanns and Spur-Thighed kept together?

You could try Reptoboost:-

http://www.vetark.co.uk/pages/Reptoboost.aspx

It's a probiotic that kickstarts a tortoise's system and should be added to a drinking water or you can bathe your tortoise in it -.....but rinse your tortoise off after.

HTH

Kindest Regards

Darren
