Thin egg shells Posted: 08/04/2011 by Ruperta |

My tortoise just laid eggs for the first time (that I'[ve seen, as she was indoors at the time). There were 5 yolks and very thin, papery, broken egg shells. Does this mean there is not enough calcium in her diet? Or is it normal for a first clutch? She's 14 years old.

Sounds like calcium shortage to me...but calcium does need vitamin D to be metabolised, does she get UV lighting? Can you tell us more about her general upkeep? Do you supply calcium and mineral supplements regularly already? If yes, what, when and how much? Regards, David nr York
