Quality tortoise vets in UK Posted: 12/04/2011 by DavidWYork |

Hi there. I am one of those really lucky people with a local, knowledgeable tortoise-orientated vet. They are few and far between in my experience, and, according to postings on this site. It really concerns me how many owners clearly need some immediate help. More worrying is the number of people with seemingly no nearby vet or means of getting prompt help. Many of us realise that a few hours can make the difference between death and recovery. So, those of us with success stories due to prompt and appropriate vet intervention need to ensure we log those details and anecdotes as postings, and ensure that the recommended vet list grows to ensure nationwide coverage. As it stands there are around 3 dozen TPG recommended vets for the whole of the UK...very roughly one, per two million people! So why not endeavour this year to significantly increase the vet database? All too often we are so involved with our beasties, I fear some of us forget the thousands of captive torts which potentially may suffer through lack of speedy, local vet assistance...With so many imports still and many UK breeders, the need will only increase. So, let's get busy on our computers and share anecdotes, experiences and names of vets "in the know", in readiness for an increase in problems and enquiries. David nr York

Hi David, what a great idea , we could perhaps have a separate heading of vets on the forum front sheet dedicated to vets recommendations. I will see if this is possible. Or if anyone can think of any other ideas, please let us know. Vivienne
